Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 August 2026, 09:00 to 17:00, at the LINGAN Innovation Expo Center in Pazhou, Guangzhou — three minutes on foot from the Canton Fair complex. Roughly a hundred and fifteen stands, over a hundred brands, six thousand square metres of floor. For two days, the Chinese pocket-mechanism trade is in one room.

If you follow this hobby from outside China, you have been watching its output for years without ever seeing its trade. Objects arrive through resellers and agents who list them on their own websites — a layer of intermediaries standing between you and whoever machined the thing. The scene that produces them has stayed mostly invisible: a market you buy from but cannot walk through.

EDC DAY 2026 is that market becoming a place.

This note is what it is, where it came from, and what is actually in the room. It is written from outside — from the announcement posts, not from the floor — and it says so wherever that matters.

01 / FACTS

The plain facts

EDC DAY 2026, formally the 2026 EDC Hardcore Gear Exhibition — 2026EDC硬核装备展览会.

In English: Guangzhou Hard Core EDC Expo 2026.
Tagline for this event is: Every Day Carry.

Worth noticing

The third and fourth characters, 硬核, literally read hard core — but it is not a translation. It is a calque of the English word, absorbed into Chinese internet slang, and it now means uncompromising, technically serious, no-frills. The show calls itself hardcore in a Chinese word borrowed from English to describe an English acronym. That is the whole category in four characters.

  • Saturday 1 – Sunday 2 August 2026, 09:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:30
  • LINGAN Innovation Expo Center (LIC), 628 Xingang East Road, Pazhou, Guangzhou
  • 6,000 m²+, three zones, roughly 115 booth entries, well over a hundred brands
  • Reservation-only entry, advertised at 2,000+ people a day
  • Two tickets: standard at RMB 128, advanced player at RMB 368

That is the whole show, and it is worth being precise about the scale. The organisers give the show’s own footprint as 6,000 m²+ — one hall of a working commercial exhibition centre that fills its own calendar with more than twenty trade fairs a year. EDC DAY is taking a hall, not the building. Nobody should come to this expecting scale — what makes it worth writing about is the density and the address.

02

Is this the first one?

EDC DAY is not China’s first EDC expo.

There is a platform called EDC SHOW, founded and continuously backed by the maker behind Lautie, who publishes under the handle The Tsundere Old Blacksmith. EDC SHOW has already staged two editions of the Shanghai EDC Toy Exchange Expo, and on the last two years’ evidence it settles somewhere around April.

Pinning a start date to any of this is a mug’s game. These things began as gatherings, not as companies — there is no incorporation, no launch announcement, no first edition anyone agreed to call the first. What can be traced is the lineage, and the lineage is clear enough. Guangzhou is in August. That is this show.

And Beijing appears to be October. We understand there is a further show or expo in the capital, organised by Chimago. We have not yet seen the material for it, so nothing here is confirmed and none of the detail below applies to it — but it is on our list, and it will get its own Field Note once we have something solid to write from.

Three cities. Spring, late summer, autumn.

Each city is drawn in its own show’s colours — EDC DAY’s wordmark yellow, EDC SHOW’s orange, EDC SHOWCASE’s vermilion. Schematic, not a survey. Cities are plotted by true latitude and longitude; the coastline is simplified and the country outline deliberately generalised. Shanghai’s April timing is inferred from two years of evidence, not a published date. The Beijing show is reported to us and unverified — drawn dashed. Shenzhen is the December 2025 origin, not a node in the current year.

Nobody has announced a national circuit. But if you stand back from the individual events, something that looks a lot like one is assembling itself — and it is assembling from opposite directions. Shanghai’s show grew out of a maker who built a platform. Guangzhou’s grew out of regional clubs that outgrew the back room. Whatever Beijing turns out to be, three cities running three shows in three seasons is a hobby developing a calendar, and a calendar is the thing that turns scattered events into a season.

One more thing the map shows once you draw the whole country: every one of these sits on the eastern seaboard, inside the manufacturing belt. The west has none.

Which is why EDC DAY’s own claim is worth reading precisely. It does not say first in China. It says the Greater Bay Area’s first major exhibition, and South China’s first EDC gear expo that actually delivers on “hardcore”. That claim is doing some heavy lifting.

What the Greater Bay Area is, and why the organisers keep saying it

Not a loose regional gesture — an official designation. The Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area is a Chinese state-designated megaregion, formalised by an Outline Development Plan published in February 2019. It covers eleven cities: the two special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao, plus nine Guangdong municipalities — Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Huizhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen and Zhaoqing. Roughly 56,000 square kilometres and more than 88 million people.

It is also, not incidentally, one of the densest concentrations of consumer-hardware manufacturing anywhere on earth. So when the organisers brand this as the Greater Bay Area’s first big EDC show, they are reaching for policy language on purpose. It files a fidget expo inside a national development framework — and it is very likely why the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Commerce ended up on the masthead.

A hobbyist gathering does not get a commerce department. A Greater Bay Area trade event does.

The lineage

EDC DAY’s ancestry runs back through club gatherings. The April announcement traces it to a 2025 meetup called E · Gather and Play, a joint EDC demonstration event, and a Shenzhen year-end wrap-up whose stage signage reads EDC Shenzhen Joint Trend-Toy Exhibition, 13–14 December 2025. The post’s own phrasing is the Bay Area gathering gets an upgrade, after what the organisers describe as more than a year of preparation. It would be tidy to call that a club night growing into an expo. The photographs say otherwise. The earlier gatherings really were informal — trestle tables and blue cloths in a mall atrium, objects laid out on foam mats, astroturf underfoot, bubble tea beside the stock. But by December 2025 the Shenzhen show already had modular booths, printed fascia boards, glass cases, branded tote bags and booth codes running A-02, B-12, B-13 — the same A/B block convention EDC DAY uses now, just hyphenated. So this is not a transformation. It is a scale-up of something that already had the machinery, moved to a bigger city, ticketed, and given a commerce department.

Four groups are named as being behind it, under the banner assembling the Bay Area’s forces:

the EDC Joint Trend-Toy Exhibition

the Greater Bay Area EDC Club

the Shenzhen EDC private group

the WeChat account Little Lu Who Plays EDC

Read this with care

That last name is the one to hold on to. Little Lu is the scene’s principal chronicler — the account that published every announcement, exhibitor roll-call and product reveal this note is built from — and also a co-organiser of the show.

The community’s main media voice is running the event it reports on. In a hobby this size that is close to unavoidable, and it is not a scandal. It does mean the public record of EDC DAY is written by EDC DAY. Worth knowing when you read it. Including when you read this.

The commerce bureau’s formal title on the masthead is guiding body — an official sponsorship role, not a courtesy credit. This is no longer a hobby the local state has never heard of.

03 / Geography

Why Guangzhou specifically

Because that is where the metal is cut.

Inside the Greater Bay Area, the Pearl River Delta corridor — Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan and the towns between them — is where a very large share of these objects are actually machined, anodised, heat-coloured and assembled. This is the manufacturing region holding an exhibition about the thing it manufactures, which is a different proposition from a collectors’ convention — and it explains a good deal about who took a stand.

Shanghai had the shows. Guangdong has the shops.

The venue sits in Pazhou, Guangzhou’s exhibition district: 628 Xingang East Road, directly above Exit F of Xingang East station on Metro Line 8, sharing its address with the Zhongdai Plaza complex. One minute from the metro, three minutes on foot from the Canton Fair Complex, two hundred metres from that complex’s Area C. This is a working commercial exhibition hall — furniture fairs, garden trade shows, heritage-craft expos — not a hired ballroom.

And its pitch tells you something. LIC sells itself on sharing a metro station with the Canton Fair and riding the forty million merchant visits a year that pass through it, while offering, in its own words, hotel-grade standards at exhibition-hall prices. It is the value venue in the prestige postcode. For a first-time hobby expo that wants to be taken seriously without paying Canton Fair rates, that is close to the perfect address — and choosing it is a statement about which category you think you belong to.

The LINGAN Innovation Expo Center, Pazhou, Guangzhou
The LINGAN Innovation Expo Center at 628 Xingang East Road, Pazhou — one minute from Xingang East metro, three from the Canton Fair complex. Organiser photograph.

There is a second geography inside the show. Guangzhou is not neutral ground — it is Cantonese ground, and Lingnan cultural identity turns up all over the exhibitor material. Several makers built show pieces specifically around it: dragon-boat racing, Cantonese yum cha, the Xiguan qilou arcade houses, the Five Rams, the Canton Tower and Liede Bridge, the awakening lion of the Cantonese lion dance, the intangible-heritage craft set known as three carvings, one colour, one embroidery.

One joke, four layers

The best of these is the smallest. The brand NEOJOY named its show-exclusive after latiao — a chewy, seasoned wheat-gluten snack strip sold everywhere in China, the sort of thing you ate too much of as a kid. The name means, literally, spicy strip. Being spicy is the entire point of the product it is named after.

The subtitle NEOJOY gave it is:

粤味唔辣

NEOJOY latiao card — the Guangzhou show exclusive at booth B53
NEOJOY latiao, booth B53 — the Guangzhou show exclusive. Organiser material, used with permission.

That reads Cantonese flavour, not spicy — and there are four things happening at once.

  1. Simple contradiction. A piece named after a spicy snack that announces it isn’t spicy.
  2. Regional teasing. Cantonese cooking is famously mild, built around freshness and subtlety, and it gets teased for it by people from Sichuan and Hunan the way any mild cuisine gets teased. So Cantonese flavour, not spicy is a Guangdong brand cheerfully owning the stereotype.
  3. The layer that needs the characters. That third character, 唔, is the Cantonese word for not. In Mandarin the same phrase would be written 不辣. NEOJOY used the Cantonese one — so the subtitle is not merely about being Cantonese, it is written in Cantonese. The sentence performs its own claim.
  4. It exists only here. This piece is made for this show, in this city. A local joke, made locally, for people who will get it without being told — which is roughly the opposite of how limited editions usually work.

Brands do not often design for a city. At this show, a number of them did.

04 / Definitions

What “EDC” covers here

In English, EDC has narrowed. For most readers it now means a fairly specific family of pocket toys — sliders, spinners, haptic coins. In Chinese usage it never narrowed at all, and the show is built on the wider definition.

EDC DAY organises itself around six categories: EDC stress-relief toys, keyboards and peripherals, outdoor gear, curio collectibles, flashlights, and silver jewellery.

The April announcement is blunt about it: this time, Every Day Carry isn’t just stress-relief toys any more — it’s all the gear that accompanies us in daily life. That same post contains the clearest statement of the scene’s self-definition I have found anywhere, and it explains the show’s shape better than the floor plan does. Asked what can EDC be?, it answers in five beats:

  1. a stress-relief toy that lets you release pressure any time, and gets the dopamine going
  2. the keyboard and mouse many people touch every day
  3. rugged, durable outdoor gear for when you’re out
  4. tactical flashlights that are tactical, refined and multifunctional at once
  5. silver jewellery and curios you wear and handle daily

Then: Is EDC merely an English abbreviation for a fidget toy? Say it out loud: it is not.

The fifth beat is where the deeper lineage shows. Handling is a curio-collecting practice with centuries behind it — the slow patination of an object through years of being turned over in the hand, until use itself becomes the finish. Chinese EDC inherits that idea directly. It is why so much of this material treats feel as something to be tuned and argued over rather than a by-product of good construction, and it is a lineage the Western fidget scene simply does not have to draw on.

The floor plan follows the definition: zones A and B are one combined EDC block including outdoor gear and silver jewellery; zone C is keyboards and peripherals.

05 / The floor

Who is in the room

Six kinds of exhibitor, and the mix tells you more than the headcount does.

EDC DAY 2026 exhibitor brand wall — logo grid from the April announcement

The makers

The bulk of the floor. Over a hundred brands across the A, B and C blocks — sliders, spinners, haptic coins, pry bars, folding knives, mechanical rings, push-sticks, pendants. Some are one-person studios founded in 2023; some have been machining for a decade.

The platforms

Three, named by the organisers as the three platforms. Dewu, the trend-commerce app — 600 million registered users, running a hardcore-gear blind-box zone at booth A0. zFrontier, the custom-keyboard and desk-culture platform founded in Shanghai in 2016, at C34, bringing over a hundred custom keyboard kits for hands-on trial and a 13:30–14:10 platform showcase on the Saturday. ChinaJoy UGA, the gear arm of China’s largest gaming expo, signed as official strategic partner.

The supply chain

Two exhibitors that make nothing you can carry. TESKAMETAL at B63, a Baoji rare-metals company, lists its business as titanium, zirconium, tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum and niobium, plus titanium, zirconium and copper damascus. TITAN.COLOR at B31 does engraving and metal colouring, and states it has done contract surface treatment for Samsung and Apple among others.

The overseas contingent

Clean EDC from the United States. STEEL FLAME out of Los Angeles, founded by a jeweller with thirty-five years at the bench. Poikilo Blade, founded in 2021 by two knife collectors, whose Orca series took Best Production Folder at Blade Show West 2024. Several arrive under one roof: booth B17 is a multi-brand stand hosting four artisan labels at once.

The people who sell the billet and the people who anodise it have taken stands next to the people who machine it.

The critics who became makers

At least two exhibitors entered this scene as reviewers and now manufacture. Stand-iN Hidden EDC, founded 2023, publishes reviews on Bilibili and Douyin under the same handle it sells under. Ryan EDC entered as a review blogger and started the brand the same year. The line between commentary and production in this hobby is not just thin — for some people it does not exist.

A car company

NIO has a display area at the top of the hall, next to the stage. One car is being given away on the Sunday afternoon.

Names are given in English where a brand prints its own Latin name, and translated by us otherwise — those renderings may not match how a brand styles itself elsewhere. The 15 July list and the later floor plan do not fully reconcile: the plan carries codes the list omits, and some brands appear on later exhibitor cards at booths the list assigns to someone else. Where the two disagree, the later card wins.

06 / Programme

What actually happens over the two days

Not just browsing. The show is programmed.

Getting in. Two tiers. The advanced ticket buys a 09:00 door instead of 09:30 — but not a place in the queue. Advanced holders draw a ballot on site between 08:00 and 08:20 and enter in drawn order; the ballot closes at 08:50, after which a latecomer forfeits the draw and enters in arrival order.

The rules state plainly that buying earlier gets you a slot, not a position.

Challenge stages. Mini-games around the floor. The organisers deliberately did not say what they are — not announced in advance; you find out when you get there. Clearing one earns lottery entries: one for standard tickets, two for advanced.

Draws, repeatedly. A gear prize pool billed at ten-thousand-yuan class, drawn in multiple rounds each day. A social check-in draw at 16:00 both days. A car drawn live on the Sunday afternoon. There is a dedicated prize registration and redemption area on the floor plan, and both ticket tiers get a gift desk at the door.

Lucky bags. The organisers collected new and limited pieces from across the exhibitor list and pooled them into bags drawn at event level, so that — in their words to those holding a late ballot number — don’t be discouraged, as many players as possible get a chance to take something good home. Advanced tickets get priority purchase rights on a fixed block. Detailed rules were still unpublished a few days out.

Stage programming. An opening ceremony, the zFrontier session on Saturday, and a run of brand showcases across Sunday from 09:05 through 15:00.

FLOWSTATE

Billed as the world’s first EDC sound-and-light interactive art piece: every push captured, parsed and reconstructed in real time, sound and rhythm and trajectory rendered as moving light. A fast push throws up layered ripples; a slow one settles into a quiet stream. Whether it works is another matter — but it is the first time anyone in this hobby has tried to make the interaction itself visible at room scale.

FLOWSTATE sound-and-light interactive installation at booth B08
FLOWSTATE at booth B08 — the sound-and-light installation. Organiser material, used with permission.

And running underneath all of it, the actual reason most people are coming: dozens of makers releasing show-exclusive and debut pieces in editions as small as five. That is a separate story, and the next Field Note.

07 / Absences

Who is not there

As important as the guest list, and harder to establish.

Working from the published booth lists, several of the makers best known outside China do not appear. Lautie is present — but not under its own name: it comes in through the EDC SHOW joint booth at B06, the Shanghai platform it founded. 01EDC, NAYICI, ACEdc and WanWu Studio all have stands.

From the comment threads

Hope Studio, MOT and LQEDC do not appear on any published list. Readers noticed. Under the April post, someone asked how come LQ isn’t here again — the organiser replied that they would go and check. Under the May post, two separate readers asked whether MOT was coming; the organiser’s answer was calling MOT, which is not a yes. One commenter wrote flatly: no Chen Lei EDC, I’m not going.

Two cautions. Exhibitor announcements were still rolling out four days before the doors opened — the final pre-show post ends with other new products await later official announcement — so a name absent from the published list is not confirmed absent from the hall. And the show is regional by design; a Greater Bay Area expo is not obliged to be a national census.

Still, it is the right question to ask of any first show: which half of the scene does this represent?

On the published evidence, EDC DAY is strongest in the Guangdong manufacturing belt and in the platform-and-materials layer around it, and it has pulled the Shanghai platform south to join. The makers with the largest overseas followings are more thinly represented than you might expect from the view outside China.

08 / Reading

What it signifies

Three things, none of which are about fidgets.

A hobby has acquired infrastructure. Not just a venue — a ticketing platform with real-name ID binding, a municipal commerce department on the masthead, contract manufacturers exhibiting alongside their customers, three commerce and media platforms buying in, and a formal lottery-based allocation system for scarce goods. Scenes do not build that. Industries do.

The categories are merging. A custom-keyboard platform, a gaming expo, a trend-resale app and a fidget scene have all decided they are adjacent enough to share a floor. They are probably right, and the reasons are more mechanical than commercial — but that argument belongs in the next note.

The scene is documenting itself. Every fact in this piece comes from posts the community wrote about its own show. Nine of them, over three months, with booth maps, exhibitor cards, brand philosophies, mechanism descriptions and edition numbers. Whatever else EDC DAY is, it is a hobby that has decided its own history is worth writing down. That is the part Pocket Mechanica finds most interesting.

The objects were always good. What is new is that the people making them have started keeping records.

Facts on file

Event — the 2026 EDC Hardcore Gear Exhibition (2026EDC硬核装备展览会), in English the Guangzhou Hard Core EDC Expo 2026, branded EDC DAY, tagline Every Day Carry.

When — Saturday 1 to Sunday 2 August 2026. The July ticketing post gives 09:00–17:00 both days with last entry 16:30; the April announcement said 09:00–18:00 and the mid-July schedule closes the hall at 17:30. The 09:00 door is advanced-tier only; standard entry is 09:30.

Where — the LINGAN Innovation Expo Center, which styles itself LIC and which the show’s own posters also place at Zhongdai Plaza: 628 Xingang East Road, Haizhu District, Guangzhou. One minute from Exit F of Xingang East station on Metro Line 8, three minutes’ walk from the Canton Fair Complex and 200 m from its Area C. A working commercial exhibition centre with its own year-round fair calendar; EDC DAY’s footprint within it is 6,000 m²+. Which hall the show occupies is not published — none of the nine posts names one; the venue is always given simply as LIC.

Admission — standard ticket RMB 128 per person per day, 09:30 entry; advanced player ticket RMB 368, 09:00 entry with ballot-determined queue order. Both tiers went on sale together at 11:00 on 11 July, allocated in payment order until sold out, through the Maoyan mini-programme only. Real-name; one ticket per ID per date; single-day, not usable across dates; no refunds or exchanges. Under-1.2 m children free with one accompanying adult, one child per adult. No food, drink, lighters or blades admitted. No cloakroom. Three days before opening the organisers stated tickets were still available but honestly not many left.

Layout — zones A and B form one combined EDC block including outdoor gear and silver jewellery; zone C is keyboards and peripherals. Roughly 115 booth entries against the organisers’ own figure of over a hundred brands. Many stands are shared. Also on the floor: a stage, a prize registration and redemption area, three gaming zones, an F&B area, and an NIO display area.

Behind it — the EDC Joint Trend-Toy Exhibition, the Greater Bay Area EDC Club, the Shenzhen EDC private group and the account Little Lu Who Plays EDC, under the banner assembling the Bay Area’s forces, with the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Commerce as guiding body. Platform partners: Dewu, zFrontier and ChinaJoy UGA. EDC FUN HUB also appears in the partner lockup; its role is not stated.

The wider calendar — the EDC SHOW platform, founded by the maker behind Lautie, has staged two editions of the Shanghai EDC Toy Exchange Expo, landing around April on the evidence of the last two years, and brings a joint booth to Guangzhou. A further show in Beijing, organised by Chimago, is understood to run in October; we have not yet examined its material and it will be covered separately.

Lineage — presented as the Greater Bay Area’s first major expo, following club gatherings including a Shenzhen year-end show, 13–14 December 2025, which photographs confirm already used modular booths and booth codes.

Sources — nine posts by the WeChat public account Little Lu Who Plays EDC, published 26 April, 24 May, 4 July, 10 July, 15 July, 24 July, 25 July, 26 July and 28 July 2026. The booth roster above is taken from the 15 July post. Venue name and address verified independently against the operator’s own site and the Zhongdai Plaza site. Context on the Shanghai and Beijing shows comes from scene knowledge outside those posts and is flagged in the text where it appears.

Disclosure — Pocket Mechanica has no commercial relationship with the show, its organisers or any exhibitor named here. This note was written remotely from published announcements; no object described in it has been handled, and no one from Pocket Mechanica attended. Chinese brand, product and organisation names appear in English throughout: where a brand prints its own Latin name we use that, otherwise the rendering is ours. Chinese characters are kept only where the characters themselves carry the meaning.

Corrections welcome, particularly from anyone who was in the hall.
