A quick-reference guide to the words used across Pocket Mechanica — the mechanisms, materials, finishes, and collector shorthand of the fidget and pocket-mechanism world. The fuller entries live in the Mechanism Notes, Material Library, and Surface Notes; this is the fast lookup.

  • EDC — Everyday carry; the objects a person carries daily. The broader hobby that fidgets sit inside.
  • Fidget — A small object designed for repeated tactile manipulation; here, a designed mechanical one.
  • Slider — An object whose action is parts moving linearly past each other — mechanical, magnetic, or floating.
  • Spinner — An object whose action is rotation around a bearing.
  • Haptic coin — A coin-format object built around a single repeatable click or snap.
  • Detent — A defined resting point in a mechanism; the reason a slider stops and clicks rather than drifting.
  • Click count — The number of distinct detents in one full travel of a slider.
  • End-stop — The defined limit at the end of a slider’s travel.
  • Travel — The distance a moving part covers through its motion.
  • Magnet timing — How the magnetic forces are tuned to catch, resist, and release through travel.
  • Snap — The sudden pull of magnets closing a gap.
  • Rail / track — The channel a slider’s carriage runs along; its geometry governs feel.
  • Tolerance — The precision of fit between moving parts; tight tolerance is smooth, loose is rattly.
  • Handfeel — The overall tactile impression of an object in use.
  • Feel profile — A structured description of how an object behaves in the hand.
  • Sound profile — A structured description of an object’s acoustic character.
  • Bearing — The low-friction pivot at the centre of a spinner.
  • Spin time — How long a spinner rotates from one push.
  • Drop — A release event, often time-limited, common in the Chinese EDC scene.
  • Batch / small-batch — A limited production run; many objects are made in defined batches, not continuously.
  • Restock — A repeat run of a previously sold-out object.
  • Group buy (GB) — A pooled pre-order organised to fund or unlock a production run.
  • Maker / studio — The designer or workshop behind an object; in this hobby, a tracked creative identity.
  • Clone / replica — An unauthorised copy of an original design; a core authenticity concern.
  • Aftermarket / secondary market — Resale of objects after the original release, often above retail for limited pieces.
  • Grail — A highly sought-after object a collector aspires to own.
  • NIB — New in box; an unused object in original packaging.
  • Modular / shell — A design with interchangeable outer parts, letting one object take multiple looks.
  • Ano — Slang for anodised, and for the colour an anodised finish produces.
  • Zirc — Slang for zirconium.
  • Ti — Shorthand for titanium.
  • Knurling — A textured, patterned grip cut or rolled into a metal surface.
  • Chamfer — A bevelled edge cut to soften a corner.
  • Patina — The aged, oxidised surface that develops on copper and brass over time.
  • Stonewash — A tumbled, worn matte finish that hides wear.
