Bearing

A bearing lets one part rotate around another with minimal friction. In pocket mechanisms it’s the heart of every spinner and the quiet enabler of many smooth-rotating objects.

Common object types

Spinners, rotating-action objects.

What affects feel

Bearing type (steel vs ceramic vs hybrid), build quality, lubrication, and seating. A clean ceramic bearing spins long and smooth; a cheap steel one drags and rattles.

What affects sound

Material and lubrication — steel bearings buzz, ceramic runs near-silent, dry bearings whine.

What can go wrong

Drag from over-lube or contamination, grit, wobble from poor seating, and wear that shortens spin time over time.

Collector terms

Ceramic, hybrid, R188, spin time, lube.
