Ask INSITU what the studio refuses to give up and the answer is one word: innovation. The studio is unusually clear about what it costs. Innovating, it says, necessarily means breaking a lot of people's established expectations, and players need time to accept it. There has been no compromise — and the evidence is that both of the objects INSITU is best known for are routinely played wrong.

The argument in full — INSITU is a one-year-old studio run by people with eighteen years of interior design behind them, working on the site of a decommissioned arsenal, and it has taken a position most of this category never attempts: reduce the base to the fewest parts that still deliver the whole function, then hand the rest of the decisions to the owner. Both halves of that are legible in the objects. Neither half photographs.

The cost is measurable. Players arrive at the Oumuamua expecting a slider that rings and miss a platform that accepts springs, magnets, beads and spikes. They arrive at the 3I/ATLAS expecting a heavy snap and get a light cascade of closing plates, built that way on purpose so the object survives an hour in the hand. In both cases the market supplied the missing expectation from memory rather than from the object. The studio has not adjusted the objects to fit.

Asked what a photograph cannot show, the answer names the tactile quality the material delivers once the object is in hand, and how well the structural design makes it sit there. And asked what a finished object is, the position is genuinely dissenting for a category that treats hand feel as the terminal value: good feel means only that the first step has been taken. A complete product is composed of multiple dimensions, and the studio describes itself as still working out what those are.

The hardest part, in their account, is not failure. Success and failure at product level are both temporary, and problems tend to resolve in strange ways. The hard part is holding clear-eyed market judgement while in the middle of creating. There is no method for that. Naming its absence is the most honest thing in the file.

01 The brief, and its second half Method

Asked what single design problem it keeps returning to, the studio gave one answer with no hedging: simplifying a product's structure until the simplest possible structure still presents the complete function.

That runs against the commercial grain. The incentive in pocket mechanical objects rewards addition — more modes, more parts, more visible complexity, more reasons to photograph the object in pieces. A studio measuring itself by how much structure it can remove is competing on a metric its market does not display.

The second half is where the position gets interesting. The Oumuamua is sold as a composite slider, and asked what composite means here, the studio was direct: the core play is not push-and-slide. It is closer to a general-purpose carrier that accepts fitted accessories.

PM reading. These are one position, not two. Strip the base to the fewest parts that still work, then leave the rest to the owner. Neither half photographs, which is why both objects get misread.

02 #38-6-11, on the arsenal ground The site

The studio and team are in Chongqing, on the former grounds of what was once China's largest arsenal. The studio confirms it plainly and permits it in print. Every poster it issues carries the same coordinates: 29°33′00″N 106°33′00″E.

The district is now a national-level urban renewal demonstration zone. Almost all the old community buildings were kept. In the studio's words, the trees here watched them grow up. New culture and commerce sit on top — local food, cafés and bars, a number of design studios like their own — while many of the elderly who worked in the factory still live here, with much of the local infrastructure existing to serve them. The studio's summary of the result is two words that translate as contradictory and harmonious at once.

38-6-11 is not a product code. It is the door plate of the studio's old house. They describe the place as old and disorderly, then immediately describe who turns up at it: designers and illustrators, coming to brainstorm and make things together.

PM reading. A studio whose brief is getting back to the minimum named itself for returning to the starting point, and stamps its files with a street number instead of a logo. The consistency is the point.

03 Three people, and who is speaking The record

INSITU was founded in 2025, which makes nearly everything in this file the output of a studio roughly one year old. The eighteen years came first and were not spent in objects — they were spent in spatial design: commercial and private interiors, both the design and the build.

FU GUI LEE is the principal and leads product design. Michelle runs brand operations, visual design, marketing and customer service. mandy handles sales liaison, customer service and media. An outside team supplies illustration and media resources. Michelle grew up in this community; the middle school the two of them attended stood here.

A note on the voice in this file. Asked who wrote the studio's first questionnaire, the answer was Michelle, on the principal's behalf. She answered the second round as well. Every first-person account here is therefore the studio speaking through its brand lead, not the designer speaking for himself, and we have attributed accordingly. It is an ordinary arrangement, volunteered without being pushed. We record it because a maker file is worth exactly what its sourcing is worth.

04 The beads that are not there 3I/ATLAS

The studio describes the ATLAS as having strung-bead feedback. Read cold, that implies a bead chain inside the mechanism. There is none. The phrase names a sound: three sets of armour plates striking left and right in sequence the instant a finger arrests the spin, crisp enough to resemble beads knocking together. The name was chosen after the fact, as a description of what the hand hears.

The studio's own preferred way to play it comes in two moves. First: open the armour fully, feel the centrifugal load, then the slight vibration in the hand as air enters through the gaps the split plates have opened. One player's note, which the studio repeats — 3I is named for a comet, but it is the only one of them that achieves the light-play and the vibration of an insect beating its wings. Second: at peak speed, as the spin begins to decay, arrest it quickly with a finger and take the closing run.

Two structural reasons it survives an hour, both given plainly. Its size and weight sit in a more hand-friendly range than the category norm, where most armour spinners are physically larger. And the opening runs through a central spike plate that draws the two outer plates open with it, which makes opening comparatively effortless. The studio's stated word for that is beginner-friendly, and it positions the ATLAS as a basic carry-and-play piece rather than a showpiece.

PM reading. The misreading and the design are the same fact from two sides. A market expecting a heavy snap hears a light multi-plate run and calls it insufficient. The studio built the light run on purpose, because a heavy snap is not survivable across an hour and a soft cascade is. That is a considered position on fatigue — one of the few places in this category where a maker has designed for duration rather than for the first thirty seconds.

05 The carrier, and the numbered screwdriver Oumuamua

Oumuamua is the standard Chinese transliteration of ʻOumuamua, the interstellar object astronomers could classify as neither comet nor asteroid. The packaging prints its real designation, 1I/2017 U1 — the first interstellar object ever detected. 3I/ATLAS is the third.

What an owner can currently change, in the studio's own enumeration: two interchangeable tracks, one stepped and detented, one a fine dense buzz they call electric-current feel. Beyond that — 5 mm round beads in a range of colours including glow; magnets from 1 mm to 3 mm thick, swapped to change the hand feel; different springs; and, noted without elaboration, spikes.

Asked whether shipping a screwdriver inside the package was a statement, the studio reframed the question. The screwdriver is the IDKEY. It carries a serial number and functions as the proof of identity for that set. The packaging is a waterproof circuit box. The scene they want an owner to imagine is finding that box aboard an abandoned spacecraft and opening it with a numbered screwdriver to see what is inside. Their reason: a good product has to deliver emotional value and a story atmosphere, not only function.

PM reading. Most makers ship a tool as a service item. INSITU made the tool the certificate. That is the cheapest possible way to say an object is meant to be opened, and it removes the unspoken warning that disassembly voids something. Whether the fiction lands is taste. The mechanism under it is not: an owner who has used the tool once, to get in, will use it again.

06 Material as mass, nothing else Weight

Asked about materials, the studio redirected the question, and the redirection is more useful than an answer about alloys would have been. What matters is not material identity but different weights under the same structure, and the different pressing hand feel and feedback that produces.

The Oumuamua is the proof. One geometry, four builds, all cleared by the studio for publication.

30.1 gClear
73.7 gTitanium
85 gAmber build
105.5 gZirconium

More than a threefold spread across an unchanged mechanism. Every variable that usually moves with material — track geometry, travel, detent spacing — is held still. Only mass changes, so mass is the only thing the hand can be reporting.

PM reading. A structure-first position on material, consistent with the brief. Once the mechanism is down to the fewest parts that work, mass distribution is one of the few levers left. It also happens to be a well-formed experiment: four samples, one variable.

07 Science fiction, and two on the bench Direction

The naming system is deliberate and the explanation is unglamorous. FU GUI LEE and Michelle both like extraterrestrial science fiction, so products take their names from astronomical phenomena or alien-civilisation material the studio is currently drawn to. Science fiction, they say, is the core story style of INSITU's first year.

THE CORE is a collaboration with SPINMOON. The division is clear: SPINMOON designed it, INSITU handled launch and promotion, and SPINMOON initiated the invitation — in INSITU's reading, because the form suited their science-fiction register. The acoustic mechanism, in the studio's description: the structure is heavily hollowed and the blades are shaped into a classic tuning fork, so airflow passes rapidly through the gap in the middle as the spinner turns. The principle they name is whistling.

INSITU has said before that it wants to make something weapon-like and was waiting for an idea good enough to justify it. That has moved. Two weapon-adjacent designs are now in sampling — one structural, one formal. Nothing further is public.

PM reading. The tuning-fork answer is the useful one. A maker has named, in Chinese, a mechanism we have observed across several unrelated studios. That is a sourced term, not an English coinage, and it goes into the glossary as such.

Facts in this file come from two Pocket Mechanica interview rounds with INSITU 原地EDC, answered for the studio by Michelle. Passages marked PM reading are Pocket Mechanica's interpretation and were not asserted by the maker. Chinese terms used above are set out in full in the Terms panel.
