Fatboy EDC: The Motif Has To Carry Load
He builds spinners out of a divination system, a Warring States coin, and the twelve hours of the Chinese day. The claim is not that the reference is beautiful. It is that the reference is structural — and when it fails, he publishes the wreckage.

Fatboy EDC is not best understood as a studio that makes spinners with Chinese motifs on them. It is better understood as a studio testing whether a motif can be made to carry load — whether a cultural reference can be converted into geometry, and geometry into mechanism, instead of being printed onto a surface and called a theme.
That distinction is the whole maker. A great many objects in this category take a cultural image and apply it: an engraving, a colourway, a name. The object underneath would work identically without it. Fatboy’s better pieces do not survive the removal of the reference, because the reference is the structure. Take the coin away from Tai-Chang and you do not lose the decoration. You lose the rotor, the index mark, and the reason the body is a triangle.
This is a demanding way to work, and it fails often. Fatboy’s most valuable public document is a record of it failing.
The system: twelve generals
Fatboy’s classical line is named for 大六壬 — Da Liu Ren, a Chinese divination system with twelve heavenly generals at its core. He is working through them.
腾蛇 Teng-She is one of the twelve. 太常 Tai-Chang is another. The studio has not announced a roadmap and does not need to; the structure announces itself the moment you know what you are looking at. Each object takes one general, reads what that general governs, and builds the object out of it.
This is the part that separates method from decoration — and the two objects show it working in opposite directions.
Teng-She is a fire-element general. It governs change, sandstorm and mist, and mystery, and in the tradition it is classed as a 凶神 — an inauspicious spirit. Fatboy does not soften that. In his own launch text he describes it as bad-tempered and impatient, blunt but straightforward, and labelled fierce precisely because it does things its own way. Its strangeness, he writes, lies in refusing to be bound by convention and succeeding anyway — and that is what he wanted the object to carry to the person holding it.
The form follows from the creature rather than from a picture of it. The blades take the shape of dragon horns. The locking element is called 流云, flowing cloud, and fuses a rolled-cloud motif with a Möbius ring — endless change, endless return, placed at the joint that holds the object together. The body is opened up with 镂空, openwork, which he uses to render the snake’s hiss as absence rather than ornament.

Tai-Chang, in the source material, is a minister — chief of the Nine Ministers, keeper of rites and music, master of the sacrificial calendar. The name also carries “the way of constancy.” Fatboy takes that and goes to Spring-and-Autumn knife money for the form. The old bronze coin is round on the outside and square within: heaven round, earth square. So the object’s centre is a round rotor with a square index mark at its middle, sitting where the coin’s square hole would be — and where your fingerpad sits when you hold the object still. The outline is a triangle, answering the 三才, the three powers. The three swept wings take their profile from the blade of the knife coin.
None of that is graphics. The square mark is where your finger goes. The triangle is the mass distribution. The wing profile is the sweep.
Alongside this runs a second, deliberately separate line — 未来, “Future” — announced in August 2025 as a home for innovation pieces, welfare pieces and EDC accessories, with its own mascot: a small robot, named by community vote. DITTO belongs there. The two lines do not share a visual language and are not supposed to. What they share is the rule underneath them — and the objects themselves are where that rule is easiest to test.
In the hand: the triangle and what moves inside it

Both objects are three-lobed, and both are built around stability in rotation. What is interesting is that they get there by opposite means.
Tai-Chang adds. Its stated design intent is triangular symmetry combined with mass driven outward — pushing weight to the extremities to maximise stability, spin duration, and the range of tricks the object will tolerate. That is ordinary flywheel reasoning and it is sound: mass at the rim raises the moment of inertia, and more inertia means longer, steadier rotation and more forgiveness when the object is thrown, caught, transferred, or spun off-axis.
Teng-She subtracts. Its openwork is not only there to suggest a snake’s cry; the launch text credits it with making the object light and portable while retaining superior stability when spinning. Material is removed and the object is claimed to hold its axis better for it.
These are not the same argument, and it is worth resisting the urge to merge them into one house style. One object is tuned by where the mass sits; the other by how much of it there is. The constant is the three-lobed body and the intent. The solution changes per object, which is what you would expect from a studio that lets the source material dictate the geometry.
Teng-She’s published figures: 56 mm rotating diameter, 14 mm across the lock, 70 g in stainless steel. The maker notes in the same breath that only the stainless weight is confirmed — production capacity had not yet settled the others. That is a sales post declaring its own missing data, which is rarer than it should be.
But the more interesting move, across both objects, is what he puts inside the body.

Teng-She could take 6 mm beads, seated in the blades — the maker’s image for it is the serpent chasing clouds and pearls. Tai-Chang carries three free-rolling 12 mm beads, one per wing, held loose in the structure. One product apart, the bead doubled.
They are not decoration and they are not fixed. When the object spins, they move with it — a second motion riding on the first, visible through the open wings. The object is a spinner containing something that is also in motion, and the two are coupled.
The bead is doing more work than its size suggests. At 12 mm it is large enough to be seen turning, large enough to refract, and — as far as the maker is aware — larger than anything else in the category has carried. The standard object ships with three rainbow glass beads. Separately, and by hand, the studio makes beads with a flowing luminescent liquid sealed inside them: a moving element, inside a moving element, inside a spinning body.

DITTO takes the same principle and pushes it to the point of failure. Its signature is 流麻 — a liquid-flow chamber, suspended particulate in oil, which the spin drives. In theory, the flow is continuous: the oil carries the sand, the sand does not fight the body, and the object turns smoothly.
In practice, the finished pieces juddered.
What the judder taught them
Fatboy published the diagnosis. This is the single most valuable thing the studio has put into the world, and it is worth reading it as engineering rather than as content.
The team ruled out settling as the cause and concluded the judder was most likely coarse grains seizing under the 2 mm cover plate — the suspended medium binding rather than flowing once the plate fixed it in place. At the same time, they had a second complaint about the same part: a 2 mm plate made the whole object feel thick in the hand — “meaty” is the word used — which is wrong for a triangular body that wants to sit lightly between the fingers.
One part, two failures. So they made one change: the cover plate went from 2 mm to 1 mm.
It worked. The medium read more cleanly, the fill was more restrained, and the handfeel measurably improved. A millimetre.
The difference between an object that stutters and an object that flows was a millimetre of cover plate — and finding it required building the object wrong first.


That is the entire argument for taking these objects seriously, contained in one decision: a motion fault, correctly attributed to a thickness fault, and only discoverable in the hand.
What the process costs
The DITTO diary is a year of process failure, published with photographs of the studio’s own reject parts.

The object began as steel with a coloured flow chamber, and the flow version was not even the original concept — it was the B variant; A was a chip inlay. The material was later moved from steel to titanium, to carry more surface expression. They filed a patent.
The finishing process is where it came apart. The original recipe was polish, anodise, engrave. It could not be made to work, for a reason that has nothing to do with skill: handwork on this object inevitably marks the surface, and a mirror polish has nowhere to hide a mark. They tried masking off the surface during resin injection; the masking became unmanageable under the pour. And each pour of the flow chamber needs roughly seven days of settling to clear bubbles — and if a bubble appears anyway, the piece must be stripped, refilled, re-encapsulated and re-settled. Every rework is another week and another chance to mark the surface. The error tolerance of the process compounds against itself.
So they made the trade: polish out, blast in. Blasting softens and hides the micro-marks that polish exposes. They tested stone-wash as an alternative and found it less stable under subsequent anodising. It is a downgrade in one register and a survival decision in another, and they say so.
The material in these objects is not the expensive part. What is expensive is the labour behind it, and the time and energy spent getting it wrong, again, and again.
Fatboy EDC · on the DITTO build

The constellation edition of DITTO took roughly six months and six or seven sample rounds. It sold out on release day, before the studio had managed to shoot the video explaining any of this.
Material and fabrication logic
Ask Fatboy for one material and he chooses tungsten, and his reason is behavioural, not visual.

Density, he argues, is the most immediate difference a material makes. Tungsten changes how the object moves: the mass is obvious the moment it is lifted, and that mass propagates into spin, stability and momentum. The object becomes grounded and deliberate. What fascinates him is that an identical design in PEI, titanium and tungsten is not one object in three finishes — it is three different objects, communicating through weight, balance and motion in ways that have nothing to do with how they look.
He does not have to argue this. His own release data proves it. The second Teng-She release put the same body into four Damascus-family materials:

Forty-five grams to eighty-two grams in the same geometry. The Timascus piece and the Coppermascus piece share every dimension and are not the same object in the hand. One is quick and skittish; the other has to be respected. That is what he means, and it is measurable.
The tungsten claim is not rhetorical either. He has put twenty-two tungsten pieces into the Tai-Chang production run — the largest single material block in the release — with the surface finish still undecided at announcement. He is spending real production capacity on the material he says he believes in.

The exotic materials are not chosen only for the photograph either. The single superconductor piece made for the Tai-Chang release shows its internal filament structure across the entire face — a pattern that exists because of how the material is built, not because anyone drew it. Machining is what exposes it. The surface is a cross-section.
Cohesion as the non-negotiable
There is one rule the maker refuses to compromise on, and he calls it cohesion. By it he means something specific and expensive. The product, for him, is not the toy. It is the toy plus the ID card, the packaging, the accessory, the gift, and the cultural story — and every one of those elements has to speak the same design language.
He proves it three times, and the proof is that he solved it differently each time.

Teng-She, his debut, was drawn from the horns of the Chinese dragon. The design language was grand, so the package was a premium gift box. Because it was his first release and he wanted to thank the players who took the risk, he included a digital scale as the accessory — a nod to the dragon’s weight and status — and put the ID card in a gold envelope.
Ditto was the first liquid-flow object of its kind in the scene, built on innovation. Its paper box was not made from the most luxurious material available, and that was the point: the packaging had to feel creative, playful and surprising, because the packaging was itself part of the innovation.
Tai-Chang went back to ancient coinage and Warring States knife money. So: a traditional sandalwood collector’s box, and a certificate of authenticity, deepening the historical claim rather than dressing it up.
Three objects, three completely different packaging decisions, one rule. He is explicit that holding this line costs time, money and sometimes sales. That is the definition of a principle: it is only a principle when it is expensive.
The system extends further than most collectors realise. Behind the studio sits a full membership architecture — physical identity tags, a three-tier structure earned through Fatboy objects, one-off pieces auctioned to establish it. It was seeded from the very first release: one card in each of the four Teng-She materials was printed with red numerals, and that card is a permanent tier upgrade, redeemable whenever the structure it belongs to is finished. He was building the membership before he had the membership. The ID card he mentions in passing is not a card. It is the entry point to a structure.
The design problem
The maker states his own tension plainly, and it is a real one.
On one side, he does not believe a spinner needs constant functional reinvention. There is something he wants to protect in an object that is balanced, restrained, and content to simply exist. On the other, the market has moved. New interactive mechanisms, modular builds and linked movements have genuinely enriched the category, and a saturated market rewards the maker who does something new.
His question — the one he says he asks himself with every product — is how to make something fresh without sacrificing elegance and identity. He is not worried that innovation is bad. He is worried about the attitude behind it: that in chasing novelty, the restraint and clarity that drew him in are being spent.
The motif is his answer to that. A cultural source imposes constraints from outside the market. It tells you what the geometry has to be before novelty gets a vote. It is a way of being new without being arbitrary.
The reset point
He began as a player — specifically, an enthusiast of three-body spinners, which is worth noting, because the three-lobed body never leaves his work. The idea that took hold, and by his own account would not let go, was to make something his fellow players would genuinely value. He describes this as romantic, and he is not being ironic about it.
He has never, he says, been interested in making objects that are perfectly optimised or groundbreaking in every dimension. What matters more is that each piece carries a distilled understanding of one specific idea, thought through at length, made physical so someone else can pick it up and meet it.
The studio was founded on 16 February 2025. Its first object went on sale five weeks later.
The name comes from two places at once: from the maker himself — 178 cm, 95 kg, self-described fat boy — and from a favourite ice cream truck at the port, also called FATBOY. Honest, warm, unpretentious. The mascot is a capybara, and it is doing the same work as the name.
That is all the biography the objects require. The rest of it is in the geometry.
Reading the lines as evidence
Do not try to make Fatboy’s themes connect. A dragon, a Warring States coin, a robot, the twelve zodiac hours — they do not resolve into one image and they are not meant to.
What connects is the conversion.
The Da Liu Ren line converts a divination system into geometry: one general, one object, and a form derived from what that general governs.

The Future line converts a mechanism into a theme rather than the other way round: the liquid-flow chamber came first, and the constellations and zodiac were mapped onto it afterwards. And even there, the mapping is made to do work. DITTO’s zodiac edition runs twenty-four pieces — twelve signs, two variants each — and each sign is matched to its traditional double-hour, with the hour’s glyph rendered in oracle-bone script and engraved around the bearing bore. The reference is placed at the exact point of rotation. That is not where you put a decoration. That is where you put a claim.
The lines are separate because their design problems are separate. The rule that governs both is the one he refuses to compromise on: whatever else changes, the object and everything around it must be saying the same thing.
What Fatboy contributes
Two things, and they are unusual.
The first is the demonstration that a cultural reference can be structural. This category is full of objects with Chinese motifs applied to them and very few where the motif is doing mechanical work. Fatboy shows that the constraint of a real source — a coin’s proportions, a general’s function, a divination system’s structure — can generate geometry that then has to survive in the hand. Some of it does not survive. That is the test working.
The second is rarer: he publishes the failures.

When the first Damascus batch for Teng-She came back with severe pattern-bonding defects, the studio classified the entire batch as scrap rather than sell it, and then gave the pieces away to the community as a gift with purchase. When the special-material release met a cooling market and moved slowly, he said so, and named what he got wrong: he had planned around enthusiasm, and enthusiasm is temporary. When DITTO’s process fell apart, he photographed the rejects and published the diary.
There is a thing he has wanted to make and has not made, because the manufacturing will not currently support it — an object that reaches past touch into the visual and even the olfactory. He would rather wait than ship something incomplete. It is easy to say that. It is harder to demonstrate it, and the scrapped Damascus batch is the demonstration.
He is, in the same breath, unusually clear about what he thinks is going wrong around him. His complaint is not that people misunderstand his work. It is that the market has learned to read the resale chart instead of the object — that the first question has become will it hold value rather than does this speak to me — and that under that regime, genuinely good design goes unnoticed for being unfashionable at the wrong moment.
He is not arguing that his objects are worth what they cost. He is arguing that cost is the wrong axis, and then behaving accordingly, at his own expense.

The completed object
The final test of a Fatboy piece is not the render, the certificate, or the sandalwood box.
It is whether the reference survived contact with the hand.
Does the triangle actually stabilise the spin?
Do the beads move with the body or fight it?
Does the square index mark find the fingerpad?
Does the cover plate let the medium flow, or seize it?
Does the material change the object, or just its colour?
Those are answerable questions, and Fatboy answers them in public — including when the answer is no.
A pocket object of this kind is not finished when it leaves the machine. It is finished when the decision behind it can be felt.
That is the whole claim, and the studio’s own rejects are the strongest evidence for it: the material was never the expensive part.
